Holiday Markets in Europe: Zurich, Switzerland
In wonderful Zurich Switzerland, there is a Christmas market to suit every taste in holiday spirit, festive foods, mulled wines, pretty gifts, and Christmas entertainment.
There’s Zurich’s oldest Christmas market in the picturesque Old Town. At the urban Wienachtsdorf Christmas village on Sechseläutenplatz near Bellevue the holiday spirit is alive and well, especially in the eyes of children ogling the wonderful Christmas offerings.
Best of all is the 15-meter (49 ft) tall sparkling Swarovski Christmas tree Christmas tree at the Christkindlimarkt at Zurich’s Main Train Station nestled among dozens of holiday stands offering gifts and food to enchant visitors from all over the globe.
Zurich holiday foods are absolutely wonderful. Raclette is a tasteful melting cheese that is heated up, then scraped onto a plate with potatoes and pickles. It's one of the most delicious Swiss dishes you can find at the Christmas Markets. Öpfelchüechli is a deliciously crispy apple fritter served with custard. Flammkuchen is a flatbread with creme-fraiche, bacon, and onions on the top. You will also find Flammkuchen (German Pizza) with different toppings. Kaiserschmarrn are shredded pancakes with powdered sugar, usually served with a side of apple sauce or ice cream. There are also Fondue Dogs (yes you read that right) which are hollowed out nobs of bread filled with gooey cheese fondue that’s ladled in as you watch! And naturally there are all kinds of sausages grilled to perfection on open fires.
Of course glühwein, the mulled hot wine drink flavored with delicious spices most associated with Christmas markets, is superb. Another favorite Swiss holiday drink is glühmost, a mulled apple juice concoction made from juice that’s pressed with the seeds and skins.
As you wander through the sprawling Christmas Markets, you will find dozens of additional offerings to delight your senses.
While you traverse Zurich proper between Christmas Markets, you will also find some delightful byways and lake views in this most cosmopolitan of cites.
During my visit here, I stayed at the Hotel Schweizerhof near the main train station. It was a superb hotel, with every amenity I could imagine plus walking access to the Christmas Markets. Additionally, I popped across the street to the station to catch trains all over Switzerland and France for the rest of my trip. Simply a wonderful location!
I highly recommend Zurich for holiday travel. Frohe Weihnachten! (Merry Christmas!)
